A recent study (published May 2014) in the Spanish journal Revista de Investigacion Clinica indicates that reading may be part of a “magic formula” for keeping mentally alert into old age. The study, conducted at Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia, Spain found that those who “abstained from brain-stimulating activities like reading were at increased risk of developing cognitive impairment.”
The study reinforces the committment of both Success Won’t Wait and the Leon N. Weiner Education Foundation to providing educational opportunities of all types for residents of Leon N. Weiner-owned, low-income properties. Earlier this year, LNWEF began an ongoing collaboration with Success Won’t Wait in order to improve the quality of life for the residents of these properties.
Beginning with Spellman House Apartments in College Park, Maryland, Success Won’t Wait, LNWEF, and Arbor Management (property managers for the site) have begun providing hundreds of hardcover books to each location, for use by any resident.
And, this week, the program expanded yet again with the addition of books for families with young children. Another 250 books were added to the total and locations were also expanded to include:
- The Villas at Whitehall, Elkton, MD
- Burlington Manor, Burlington, NJ
- Marrows Court, Newark, DE
- Riverview Towers, Camden, NJ
- St. James Place, Downingtown, PA
