This fall, Success Won’t Wait volunteers have been busy restocking Little Free Libraries throughout the state!
Never heard of a Little Free Library? This nonprofit organization, based in St. Paul, Minnesota, offers residents across the country and around the globe, essential access to books. Over 175,000+ of these independent, mini libraries are located in over 120 countries, and are entirely volunteer led and operated.
Little Free Library book-sharing boxes play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books, and encouraging a love of reading, in areas where books are scarce. Since the organization’s founding in 2010, over 400 million books have been shared!
Why is this level of book access so vital? According to the folks at Little Free Libraries, “We are facing a growing literacy crisis. Today in the United States, more than 30 million adults cannot read or write above a third-grade level. Studies have repeatedly shown that books in the hands of children have a meaningful impact on improving literacy. The more books in or near the home, the more likely a child will learn and love to read. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own.”
At Success Won’t Wait, we are proud to be a partner in the success of this worthwhile endeavor. The Little Free Libraries vision, “a book for every reader,” is exactly what we’ve been working toward since 2002!
