When most people think of the library, they picture rows of books, quiet reading areas, and a helpful librarian behind the desk. While this scenario is certainly still at the heart of many public libraries, modern libraries offer far more than just a place to the borrow the latest novels! Today’s libraries are dynamic, technology-rich environments that provide an incredible range of free resources and services. And, many of these remain “under the radar” for the average visitor. Whether you’re a student, job seeker, parent, small business owner, or lifelong learner, your local library has something for you.
Here are just a few of the surprising library resources you can access, with nothing more than your library card. (Offerings vary from state to state and even library to library. So, be sure to check your location, which m ay have additional opportunities!)
Access to Streaming Services and E-Content
Move over Netflix! Your library may offer access to streaming platforms like Kanopy, which includes thousands of documentaries, indie films, and foreign films. Many libraries also subscribe to Hoopla, a service that allows users to instantly borrow movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, eBooks, and comics. All you need is a library card and an internet connection.
In addition to streaming services, libraries offer expansive digital reading collections through platforms like Libby or OverDrive, where you can borrow eBooks and audiobooks from the comfort of your home, often with no late fees (they return themselves!).
Technology Lending Programs
Need a laptop for a few days? A hotspot for reliable Wi-Fi? Many libraries now lend technology equipment just like they do books. Items available may include tablets, laptops, projectors, GoPros, podcasting kits, even musical instruments or 3D printing pens.
This is especially helpful for students without access to devices or reliable internet at home. It’s also a great resource for adults looking to complete remote job interviews, work from home, or test out equipment before making a purchase.
Career and Small Business Resources
Libraries are incredibly valuable for both job seekers and entrepreneurs. For the job seeker, they often offer resume-writing workshops, job boards, career coaching, and interview prep sessions.
Business owners can access market research databases, business plan templates, or even connect with a helpful Small Business Development Center (SBDC) advisor through the library.
Looking for legal forms, tax help, or notary services? Many libraries provide these as well (sometimes through partnerships with local law schools or community organizations).

Free Classes and Certifications
Many libraries provide access to online learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Gale Courses, or Mango Languages, offering everything from Photoshop tutorials, to Spanish lessons, to Excel spreadsheet mastery classes. Some even provide free test prep for the SAT, GED, GRE, and more.
Want to become CPR certified, learn how to code, or take a creative writing class? Your local library may host in-person workshops taught by professionals in the community or through local partnerships.
Makerspaces and Creative Studios
A growing number of libraries across the country now offer access to makerspaces. These are hands-on, collaborative spaces equipped with tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, vinyl cutters, and even woodworking tools.
Whether you’re interested in DIY projects, digital art, or recording a podcast, the library can become your creative hub. Some locations have things like photography booths or green screens available for use, making them perfect for creators on a budget.
Unique Collections and Non-Traditional Lending
Beyond books, you can now borrow everything from board games, to musical instruments, to tools. Some libraries have even introduced a “Library of Things” collection, which include diverse items like telescopes and sewing machines.
You may also find local history archives, genealogy research centers, or access to digitized rare manuscripts and maps (great for the treasure hunter!).
Family and Community Support
Libraries are hubs for families with children. In addition to story time and early literacy programs, libraries often provide homework help, summer reading programs, and STEM activities for kids and teens.
For parents, there may be parenting workshops, access to parenting books, and even early learning kits that combine books and toys for developing skills at home. Libraries are increasingly responsive to community needs, offering programming for seniors, ESL learners, and more.

Museum and Park Passes
Love museums… but hate the admission prices? Many libraries offer free or discounted passes to local museums, zoos, parks, and aquariums. With a library card, you can gain access to cultural institutions that would normally be pricey for a family. This benefit varies by region, but is an incredible way to enjoy community attractions and arts programming on a budget.
Quiet Rooms and Coworking Spaces
Need a quiet spot to study or work? Libraries often have private study rooms, coworking areas, or conference rooms (although you may have to reserve the space in advance). Some libraries now cater to remote workers and freelancers by offering coworking passes, printing services, and even coffee stations.
Today’s libraries are more than repositories for books. They are vibrant, inclusive community centers that offer tools, technology, education, and inspiration. Whether you’re a parent, student, creator, or job-seeker, there’s likely a resource you haven’t yet explored.
So, the next time you walk past your local library, take a moment to step inside. You just might find the resource you didn’t even know you needed!
