How to Start (and Stick to!) an Adult Reading Habit

There something about summer that makes reading so much easier. Packing for vacation? Bring a book for the airport. Lazy Sunday afternoon? Flop in the hammock with the latest novel. And, don’t even start on the obligatory “beach reads”…

But sometimes, life feels too busy to find the time to read, between work, family responsibilities, and endless to-do lists. With so much vying for our attention, the idea of reading for pleasure can easily slip to the very bottom of the priority pile!

Carving out time to read as an adult, however, doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, with the right tools and mindset, developing (and maintaining!) a fulfilling reading habit really is possible

Start Small by Setting Realistic Goals

The first step? Don’t overdo it! If you haven’t read anything more than the latest Instagram posts in while, setting a goal of finishing a novel a weekend may feel a bit daunting. Instead, start with something more manageable: 10 pages a day, 15 minutes before bed, or one book a month. The goal is consistency over volume.

Pick books that genuinely interest you instead of titles that are trending or award-winning. Whether it’s historical fiction, thrillers, memoirs, or old favorites from childhood, reading something you enjoy will make it much easier to get (and stay) engaged.

Use Apps to Stay Organized and Motivated

Technology can be a huge asset in maintaining a reading habit. Apps like Goodreads and Fable allow you to track your progress, rate books, and set reading goals.

Goodreads functions like a virtual bookshelf and community, where you can see what friends are reading, write reviews, and discover similar titles.

Fable takes the social reading experience a step further, offering curated book clubs, reading prompts, and author-led discussions. It also allows users to annotate and share their thoughts as they read, making the experience feel collaborative… even when reading solo.

Join a Book Club

One of the most motivating ways to read consistently is by joining a book club. A book club creates accountability, provides structure, and turns reading into a social, not solitary, event. You can start your own with friends, family, or coworkers, or join a book club through your local library. Many organizations also host virtual book clubs, making it easy to participate regardless of your location.

If in-person meetings aren’t an option, you can consider an online reading group via Facebook, Reddit, or even Zoom. Clubs like those on Fable or Goodreads often include themed picks and active discussions that help bring books to life.

Where to Find Book Recommendations

Finding your next great read is half the fun. If you’re unsure where to start, try the following:

Librarians and bookstore staff: Always up-to-date on popular and hidden gems alike.

Book blogs and YouTube (BookTube): Reviews and recommendations for every genre.

Podcasts: Shows like What Should I Read Next? or The Book Review by The New York Times offer thoughtful suggestions.

Social media: Instagram (Bookstagram) and TikTok (BookTok) are full of readers sharing favorites and reviews.

Make Reading a Habit

Treat reading like any other wellness practice, like working out or meditating. Set aside a regular time, create a cozy reading nook, or always carry a book or e-reader with you. Replace 10 minutes of scrolling with reading one chapter. Keep a TBR (“to be read”) list to avoid decision fatigue (if you are using a book ap, this is easy).

Remember, the goal isn’t speed or quantity, it’s enjoyment. Whether you read five books or 50 this year, you’re growing a habit that nurtures your imagination, expands your knowledge, and provides a valuable escape from the everyday!
