National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year in the US from September 15 to October 15. This month-long observance honors the many contributions, cultural influences, and lasting impact of Hispanic communities on the nation’s history and achievements.
The celebration began in 1968 as a commemorative week, thanks to legislation introduced by Rep. George Brown Jr. of Los Angeles and signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to a full month. September 15 was chosen as the kickoff date because it marks the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, the event that launched Mexico’s War of Independence.
The dates throughout the month carry deep significance for many Latin American countries as well. On September 15, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all celebrate their independence. Mexico follows on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Día de la Raza (Columbus Day) is also observed during this period.
For families, teachers, and librarians looking to bring Hispanic culture into classrooms or storytime, there are many wonderful book resources to explore! Here are just a few of our favorites:
Tierra, Tierrita/Earth, Little Earth by Jorge Argueta
Veo, Veo, I See You by Lulu Delacre
Wepa by J. de la Vega
