Back-to-school season is a wonderful “fresh start.” The smell of new pencils, the excitement of seeing friends after a summer apart, the promise of crisp autumn days… it’s also a great time to set academic intentions for the months ahead. And for parents, one of the best ways to support their child’s academic success is by making reading a central part of the new school-year routine. Setting clear and achievable reading goals boosts literacy skills and builds a love of reading (that lasts well beyond the classroom!).
Why is fall such a good time to focus on reading? The beginning of the school year often comes with a burst of motivation. When parents add specific reading goals into that mix, they can establish a positive rhythm early on. To be successful, reading deserves the same attention and structure as sports practices, music lessons, or other after-school activities.
The key? Make reading goals realistic and engaging. A goal doesn’t have to be about finishing some large number of books or pages each week. It can focus on the reinforcement of habits. For example, for emerging readers the goal might be reading aloud with a parent every evening. For older kids, it could mean carving out 15-20 minutes of independent reading before bed every night. What matters most is consistency. Daily reading (whether fifteen minutes or 2 hours) makes a real difference.
Another thing parents should focus on is ownership. Kids are generally more motivated when they feel like they have a say in their reading choices. So, let them pick the books that spark their curiosity (even if those titles aren’t on your list). And remember, comic books, graphic novels, and magazines all “count.” This kind of reading variety may help reluctant readers ease into the habit. And, these materials still build vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence. (It just makes sense that when children find enjoyable, they’re more likely to stick with it.)
Parents can also make reading a shared family activity. Create a cozy reading space for reading aloud together. Start a family “book club.” Set up a family network on Fable or Goodreads.
Finally, don’t forget to celebrate kids’ milestones! Finishing a chapter book or reading aloud fluently are achievements well worth recognizing. Small celebrations also keep the momentum going! Happy fall!
