Every parent dreams about seeing their child curled up with a book, completely absorbed in a great story. But for many, sparking that kind of enthusiasm for reading is a challenge. The good news? The secret often lies in simply finding just the right books. Just like adults, kids are more likely to stick with reading when they feel genuinely interested in subject matter. And, by taking a bit of time to match books with your child’s unique personality, hobbies, and reading level, parents can open the door to a lifelong love of reading!
First, consider your child’s interests outside of books. Here are a few book categories to investigate:
- Sports Stories and Athlete Biographies
- Animal Adventures
- Mysteries and Detective Stories
- Fantasy and Adventure
- Humor and Joke Books
- Graphic Novels and Comics
- Nonfiction and “How-To” Books
- Historical Fiction
- Poetry and Short Stories
- Scary and Spooky Stories
Next, give children a choice. Kids are more motivated when they have a say in what they read, even if their picks don’t look like “traditional” literature. Comic books, graphic novels, and magazines are all valuable forms of reading. In fact, for reluctant readers, these formats often serve as stepping stones to more complex texts. (Click here to read “Why Graphic Novels Are a Powerful Tool for Young Readers.”)
It’s also helpful to think about variety. Just as adults don’t always want to continually read just one genre, children benefit from exposure to different types of books. Encourage your child to try mysteries if they lean towards fantasy for example, or nonfiction if they tend to choose humor. Sometimes the least expected title becomes the one that sparks a new love of reading! Library visits are perfect for this. Kids can browse shelves, sample different stories, get librarian recommendations, and bring home a stack of options… no pressure.
In addition, consider reading level. It’s important to strike a balance. Books that are too difficult can frustrate kids, while those that are too simple may feel boring. Aim for a “just right” level that is challenging enough to keep them engaged, but still within reach. (Teachers and librarians are wonderful resources for helping identify books in that sweet spot.) At the same time, it’s perfectly fine to let kids occasionally read below their level if it keeps their enthusiasm high. Reading for pleasure should be fun, not feel like homework.
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of shared reading. When you take time to read aloud together, you not only model the joy of books but also create bonding moments. Over time, that excitement often spills over into their independent reading. (Click here to learn more at “Want to Boost Reading Comprehension Scores? Finding the right books may take a bit of trial and error. But once you discover what resonates with your child, the rewards are incredible! The right book at the right moment has the power to turn any child into a reader.
