Whether it’s a small or large act of kindness, service has the power to unite people, build bridges and heal divides. Monday, January 19 is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a day to not only honor King’s legacy, but to demonstrate how joining together in service can transform lives across the country … and around the globe.
The civil rights icon is the only non-president with a federal holiday honoring outstanding contributions to the US. The federal government will be closed on the 19th and residents will have the opportunity to reflect on King’s legacy. King rose as a civil rights leader in 1955 during the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day became a holiday on Nov. 2, 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law officially establishing the commemoration.
Why choose acts of service on the King holiday?
King once famously said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” So, since 1994, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day has been celebrated as a “day on, not a day off,” encouraging individuals, families, organizations and businesses across the country to honor Dr. King’s vision of community through volunteerism. By participating in MLK Day service activities, you’re not only contributing to the welfare of others but also carrying forward the principles of peace and civic engagement that King championed.
This January 19, honor the spirit of King’s teachings and help to improve your local community by giving back, lifting up others and working together to create the beloved community he envisioned.
