Celebrating Black History Month with our favorite librarian… Mychal Threets!

Black History Month is observed each February as a way to celebrate important people and events throughout American history. And this year, we’d like to celebrate one of our favorite librarians… Mychal Threets!

Mychal says, “The best part of being a librarian is how much you build these connections over time. I am just privileged and blessed that I can see these interactions, these stories day in and day out. They mean so much to me. It means so much and to be able to show them that it is possible.”

Not only is Mychal the new host of a revival of “Reading Rainbow” (available on the kids-focused YouTube channel KidZuko), he also has written a new children’s book entitled I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy.

“Library joy in its simplest form is just the joy of the library. What that means is just what I try to and what I hope all library workers embody. It is [fostering that sense of] belonging,” he recently told HuffPost

I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy is illustrated by the very talented Lorraine Nam and will be published by Penguin Books on February 3, 2026. The book will be available on Amazon, Walmart, Books a Million and more.

Congrats, Mychal! What a great start to Black History Month!
