National Read Across America Day was established in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA). The goal? Encourage children of all ages to read!
The annual date, March 2, was chosen to honor the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, whose playful rhymes and zany stories have helped generations of children fall in love with reading. Reading stories about the antics of his wonderful characters is a rite of passage, and the perfect way to get children interested in reading books of all kinds.
National Read Across America Day calls upon everyone to read and engage with children to make reading a more fun and interactive experience. And annually, more than 45 million students, parents and educators participate in National Read Across America Day by organizing activities such as community read- ins, character parades and book fairs.
The NEA promotes the event across the nation with events organized in libraries, schools, book clubs and communities. Teachers and group organizers can also take a pledge and post their idea on the NEA’s website to draw even more attention.
