National Poetry Month is the perfect way to help kids (and adults!) appreciate the often-overlooked power of poetry. And in April 2026, the Academy of American Poets celebrates the 30th anniversary of National Poetry Month.
Launched by the Academy in 1996, National Poetry Month has grown into the largest literary celebration in the world, with opportunities to read, share and experience poetry at home, in classrooms, libraries and bookstores, as well as online.
Throughout the month, the Academy will offer a range of free programs, resources and events designed to make poetry accessible to everyone. You’ll find thousands of poems, essays and resources for educators, students and enthusiasts.
For example, the Academy’s free Poem-a-Day series is open to anyone who would like to subscribe. Each weekday morning, subscribers receive a new, never before published poem by a contemporary poet delivered directly to their email inbox. (On weekends classic poems are featured.)
In addition, Poetry Near You is the Academy’s calendar of events, featuring both virtual and in-person programs taking place across the country. Visitors can browse events by date or search by state to find readings, workshops and community events.
Finally, mark your calendar for the Academy’s virtual Benefit. This star-studded evening features celebrities reading inspiring and beloved poems. The 2026 event honors the Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Foundation and U.S. Poet Laureate and Chancellor Emeritus Arthur Sze. (Donations raised through the event support the Academy’s K–12 poetry education programs.)
