Success Won’t Wait donates over 5,000 books through Americorps to Weston, West Virginia

Volunteers from Lewis County schools, senior centers and the public library all pitched in to help unload the van and deliver the books to their various destinations.

In January 2008, we were contacted by Laura Ellison of Americorps who is also a volunteer at the Louis Bennett Public Library in Weston, WV. Laura told us how much the library needed new books for its collection – in fact, the Louis Bennett Public Library had a collection of a mere 19,000 books and is the only public library in the whole county!

Since the drive from Delaware to West Virginia is over 5 hours, Laura agreed to canvass other agencies and organizations in the area that also needed books.  We came up with a list of local elementary schools, middle schools, the local senior center, and of course the library, and determined the type of books each group needed the most. For months, we sorted through our “collection” to find appropriate books for each group. Although that sounds like a relatively simple task, the truth is, most of our donations simply arrive in closed boxes and after a book drive are literally piled to the ceiling! When opening a box, there’s no way to know what’s inside, so searching for 5,200 perfect books actually meant sorting through four or five times that many. We also had to clean them, pack them and label them in boxes for the different organizations, and load up the U-Haul.

Over 5,000 books were delivered!
Don, Christine, Ashley Rose, Matt and Susan McNeill traveled to West Virginia via U-Haul and over 5,000 books were delivered!

After six months of hard work, in July 2008 we made the drive to West Virginia and were able to see the ecstatic response from the representatives who met us there to collect their share of the books. It was a fabulous experience and a tremendous success!
