Three Delaware siblings were recently honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their outstanding commitment to eradicating illiteracy through the Delaware-based literacy organization Success Won’t Wait. Ashley (age 17), Matthew (age 12), and Christine McNeill (age 11) each received the award which recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard, measured by the number of hours served over a 12-month period.

Although all three siblings have volunteered consistently for the organization since 2002, the trio ramped up volunteer hours in 2008, primarily through an enterprising project to provide books to rural Lewis County, West Virginia. In January 2008, Success Won’t Wait was contacted by Americorps’ Laura Ellison, a volunteer at the Louis Bennett Public Library in Weston, West Virginia. Ellison explained the dire lack of books — the Louis Bennett Public Library had a collection of a mere 19,000 books and is the only public library in the whole county. Ellison also explained that many other agencies and organizations in the area were also in desperate need of books including elementary schools, middle schools, and the local senior center.

For months, Ashley, Matthew and Christine McNeill were instrumental in sorting through Success Won’t Wait’s collection of thousands of new and gently used books, finding appropriate ones for each different group. In July 2008, 5,200 carefully chosen books were packed into a U-Haul and the trio made the drive to West Virginia where they were able to see the ecstatic response from the organization and school representatives there to collect their share of the books.

About the President’s Volunteer Service Award

In 2003, President Bush created the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to find ways to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our Nation. The Council brings together leaders from the worlds of business, entertainment, sports, education, government, nonprofits, and the media. The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service to others. It encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires others to make volunteering a central part of their lives.

To date, the President’s Council has partnered with more than 77 Leadership Organizations and more than 14,000 Certifying Organizations to bestow more than 400,000 awards to the Nation’s deserving volunteers.
