Every so often, we hear from a school that really goes the extra mile for students. A great example is North Star Elementary in Hockessin, Delaware.
Amy Joseph wrote, “My daughter’s college roommate has a fifth grade class and needs to build her library.” Since we know that it isn’t too likely a recent college grad has much money to spend on classroom supplies, we knew we had to help.
In fact, most teachers fund quite a bit out of pocket. Author Martha White explains in “Here’s How Much Your Kid’s Teacher Is Shelling Out for School Supplies” (Money August 2016), “The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies, and it’s not chump change, either. On average, most spent nearly $500 last year, and one in 10 spent $1,000 or more. All told, a total of $1.6 billion in school supply costs is shifted from parents — or, increasingly, from cash-strapped districts — onto teachers themselves.”
So, this week Success Won’t Wait provided 200 books for North Star’s 5th grade students. It’s going to be a great school year!
