To continue the celebration of “Drop Everything and Read Month,” Success Won’t Wait recently donated almost 500 books to Eisenberg Elementary School in Delaware’s Colonial School District. The event was part of the special month-long book giveaway for all K-5th grade students in the school district led by Success Won’t Wait’s co-founder Vincenza Carrieri-Russo.
The donation included plenty of just-can’t-put-it-down-books for the school’s young students. These books were culled from Success Won’t Wait’s collection and are books that the students may take home and keep.
In addition to helping the students choose the perfect book at each of the book events, Vincenza also makes it a point to chat with the students about the importance of reading. They even practice reading as if we are practicing a sport, because if you want to get good at reading, you have to practice. And, for this event, even Miss Delaware USA was there to lend a hand!
Over the next several weeks, Success Won’t Wait co-founder Vincenza Carrieri-Russo will visit each of the other elementary schools in the District to speak to the students about the importance of reading. At its conclusion, the program will provide a book for every K-5th grade student in the Colonial School District.
Putting together such a large-scale donation was no easy feat. Luckily, our student volunteers from the Mount Pleasant High School Special Education Program were essential in the project’s sorting, categorizing and stamping of hundreds of children’s books. Our volunteers were even on-hand to see the fruits of their labor and watch as the elementary school students of Eisenberg Elementary School were able to select just the right book to take home a keep.
Many thanks go to Vincenza Carrieri-Russo for acting as Coordinator for this project, Irene Huschle-Ledford of Mt. Pleasant High School for scheduling volunteers, retired Colonial School District teacher Mace Bloom who has been volunteering tirelessly every week prepping the donations and Jennifer Ashby, M.Ed. Instructional Technology Coach at Colonial School District for ensuring that the entire process runs smoothly.
