Although it may be “the season” for neighbors to help neighbors, The Patrician Society takes that mission seriously, helping neighbors every day since 1981.The organization provides assistance for elderly people on fixed incomes, the homeless, families who receive public assistance, and the recently unemployed, as well as underemployed family breadwinners in the greater Norristown, PA area. And, when Success Won’t Wait was contacted by longtime volunteer Larry Jilk, pictured, about a need for children’s books for struggling families, we sprang into action.
This week, Success Won’t Wait volunteers culled through the organization’s current stock and selected 175 new (or like new) children’s books for distribution through The Patrician Society. Titles ran the gamut from pre-K (Biscuit, Corduroy, Little Critter), to K-5 (Barbie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Magic Tree House, Horrible Harry), to chapter books for older kids (Percy Jackson, Harry Potter).
This book giveaway partnership is just the latest in a long series of incredible efforts to assist local residents. Widely known for its community food pantry, The Patrician Society has also operated many other much-needed programs for the community. Over the past 38 years, the group has conducted a state-licensed after-school care center (the first in Norristown borough), a children’s summer day camp, a “tailgate” farmers’ market, a men’s overnight shelter, a meal ticket voucher system, nutrition education classes for mothers receiving public assistance, psychological counseling services, a Hispanic support/socialization group, a summer youth jobs training program (in conjunction with the Temple University School of Social Administration), and a senior citizens’ program.

The food cupboard is serving clients Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 pm to 3 pm. Due to the Covid -19 Crisis, the client base has doubled and resources are dwindling rapidly. There is a great need for donations of food and/or funds. Please learn more about how you can help at The Patrician Society.
