Today, communities around the globe face complex, urgent challenges. Volunteers, like those highlighted by the Daily Points of Light organization, are essential in meeting critical needs, bringing value to the communities they serve and our global society.
And this year, the organization celebrates it’s 35th anniversary!
In November 1989, President Bush established the Daily Point of Light Award for individuals making a difference. During his administration, President Bush formally recognized more than 1,000 volunteers as “points of light.” He advocated that “points of light” demonstrate how “a neighbor can help a neighbor.”
Inspired by this, in the last 35 years, millions of people have acted to “do some good” every day, using their hearts, hands, and minds to help strengthen their communities and address persistent problems. Daily Points of Light recognizes these uplifting stories to inspire others so that we may each answer the call to make a difference. (In fact, some of Success Won’t Wait’s own volunteers have been highlighted. including Vincenza Carrieri-Russo and Ashley Rose McNeill.)
What’s in store for the next 35 years at Points of Light?
Unfortunately, there are still not enough people engaged in volunteering. Points of Light has a goal to increase the number of volunteers and shape the future of volunteering in our society. The organization has launched Making Purpose Possible, a bold, strategic initiative to double volunteer participation by 2035 and build a future where everyone can live a fully engaged civic life.
