The Brandywine Senior Center, located in Claymont, Delaware, offers adults ages 50+ a vibrant, welcoming community filled with friendship, wellness, and lifelong learning. The Center provides countless ways to stay social, healthy, and engaged, which of course, includes reading!
This week, the volunteers at Success Won’t Wait did a much-needed refresh of the books available at the Center, including novels from popular authors such as Grisham, Baldacci, and Coben, non-fiction books on history and art, biographies, cookbooks, plus so much more.
Why is regular reading by seniors so important? According to a recent article at WebMD, “Numerous studies have indicated a link between reading and brain health. Studies consistently show that participating in activities that engage your brain, including reading, can help reduce the chance of developing dementia.”
In addition, reading is one of the fastest proven ways to lower stress. In Science Insights, authors note, “A study from the University of Sussex found that just six minutes of reading reduced stress levels by 68%, slowing heart rate and easing muscle tension. That makes it more effective than many other common relaxation strategies, and the benefits go well beyond a single sitting.”
