In 2005, literacy organization Success Won’t Wait, Inc. collected its 25,000th book for literacy programs throughout the tri-state area. Since 2002, the group has organized dozens of book drives, calling on residents to donate new and gently used books for redistribution in the community.

“Reaching the 25,000 mark is very exciting,” says Success Won’t Wait Co-Founder and President Susan McNeill. “The people of Delaware have been so generous that we were able to meet this goal a full two months ahead of schedule.”

Instrumental in reaching this goal was a full schedule on National Make a Difference Day, held on October 22. Success Won’t Wait volunteers teamed up with First State Robotics and the University of Delaware for two book drives that netted over 3,000 books in a single day.

“We are so thankful to John Larock of First State Robotics and Marianne Green of the University of Delaware for partnering with us in this effort. Their involvement made a tremendous difference, and helped us achieve this milestone,” says McNeill.

“It’s wonderful to see the organization grow so quickly,” says Vincenza Carrieri-Russo, Success Won’t Wait’s Co-Founder and Vice President. We have provided books for populations as divergent as the Delaware Foster Grandparents Program, P.E.A.K. — an alternative learning facility for high school-aged students, Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution, and our U.S. troops stationed in Iraq.”

In addition to program expansion, the organization is also growing roots. A generous donation of storefront space has given the group a permanent home at 1729 Marsh Road in North Wilmington. The organization uses the space as a warehouse for recently received books, book repairs, and packing/shipping. The space is also used as a permanent collection center for book donations.
