In October 2005, Success Won’t Wait, Inc. donated over 500 books to the Kent County P.E.A.K. program, located on the Terry Campus of Delaware Technical & Community College in Dover. The books, specially chosen from Success Won’t Wait’s collection, were geared towards high school aged students within the program and will be used to supplement the school’s existing library.

Laura Axtell, PEAK Program Director, was particularly excited about the donation because of the school’s sustained silent reading initiative. “Students select books from the library and read silently in homeroom for 20 minutes every day. It is really rewarding to see students enjoying reading, particularly teenagers who usually don’t read. Many of the students even take books home. Success Won’t Wait allowed us to greatly expand the library and the choices of books for our students. We couldn’t believe the variety and the fact that all the books are free.”

Hannah Rice-Stone, the program’s foster grandparent, coordinated the donation and is working with PEAK students to label and catalog the books. Stone says, “This is a great example of multiple programs working together for mutual benefit. We are really grateful for the Success Won’t Wait organization.”
“It was gratifying to donate books to such a wonderful program,” says Success Won’t Wait co-founder Susan McNeill. “We hope the students enjoy many hours of happy reading through this effort, and develop a real love of books which will stand them in good stead throughout their lives.”

Based in Dover, Delaware, P.E.A.K. (Program for Educational Alternatives in Kent County) provides an alternative educational program for students in grades 9-12 that focuses on individual student behaviors, needs, and goals through an integrated curriculum. P.E.A.K. is a Delaware Technical & Community College program located on the Terry campus of Del Tech and is funded by the State of Delaware’s Department of Public Instruction.
