One of our longtime volunteers, Ashley McNeill, just received her Prudential Spirit of Community Service Award in the mail the other day. Ashley has been a volunteer for Success Won’t Wait since 2002 and has assisted in over 40 literacy events organized by the group. She is also the creator of the “Naked Book” Recycling Program, a partner organization to Success Won’t Wait, and has recycled over 1 ton of unusable books in 2009 alone.

For her efforts, she was chosen as a Distinguished Finalist, which means she was among the “Top 4” applicants for the State of Delaware. She received a gorgeous bronze medallion as recognition of her hard work!

According to official literature, “The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level.

The program’s goals are to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Over the past 14 years, more than 260,000 young Americans have participated in the program, and nearly 90,000 of them have been officially recognized for their volunteer work.”
