Each semester, U of D students enrolled in Communication partner with a community agency and develop plans for outreach and improved community connections. This fall the partner agency is Success Won’t Wait!
“We were thrilled to connect with Success Won’t Wait for our fall partnership,” says Dr. Tracey Quigley Holden of UD’s Department of Communication. “Our Communication students are excited that their classwork allows them to personally address a local community issue and child literacy is something they all know is important.”
More than 150 students enrolled in Communication 212 will work on developing communication campaigns to expand the agency’s outreach and increase donations. The class includes students from nearly every major on campus, and is focused on developing knowledge and skills to improve communication in business and professional settings. The final project of the course is designed to connect students to the community, in keeping with the Citizen University pillar of the University of Delaware commitment.
Throughout the semester, the Communication 212 students will work in teams to find information, develop strategies, and create a presentation of their best ideas for Success Won’t Wait and children’s literacy. At the end of the semester, the student teams will collect all of their materials and give their team presentations. The best final presentations are recorded and will be shared with the directors of Success Won’t Wait.
“This kind of connection to a real organization and a real issue is invaluable to our students.” Holden explained. “No matter what background a student has, this project develops essential skills and civic experience. It also offers the partnering agency the creativity and energy of our dynamic students – it’s a win-win!”
