The partnership between Success Won’t Wait and First State Robotics (the hosts of the Duel on the Delaware) began in 2004 with a modest book drive, as part of a fledgling community service effort by First State Robotics.
Since then, the event has grown in popularity as teams vie for bragging rights (and a trophy!) as the Miracle of Reading Education community service winners. 14 teams competed on October 19, 2013 and the final tally was an amazing 4,560 lbs. of books!
The top 2 teams were:
- 1st place Team 375, Robotic Plague, Staten Island Technical High School from Staten Island, NY (1,730 lbs.)
- 2nd place, Team 1626 – Falcon Robotics, St Joseph High School from Metuchen, NJ (717 lbs)
The books collected at this event will be used by Success Won’t Wait throughout the year to complete literacy projects for children, teens, and adults. Examples of recent projects include stocking a new library at The Central School in Stanton, Delaware, providing much-needed books for the HeadStart program in Camden, New Jersey, and keeping the USO waiting area at Baltimore International Airport, Maryland filled with children’s books for use by US troops being deployed and their families to share together.
Many thanks to all of the volunteers from First State Robotics and Success Won’t Wait who made the day such a success!
