Success Won’t Wait donates 300+ children’s books to Back to Basics’ Reading is Basic program; Total now surpasses 2,800 books

Children's BooksSuccess Won’t Wait. in an ongoing partnership with Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, recently provided over 300 books to Title 1 students as part of the Back to Basics “Reading is Basic” program. The program, which Back to Basics and Success Won’t Wait launched 2011, has provided over 2,800 books to local Title 1 schoolchildren throughout New Castle and Kent counties in grades K-8.

Currently, Back to Basics, the leader in 1-on-1 tutoring in Delaware, serves over 150 Title I students from the Red Clay, Colonial, Brandywine, Smyrna, and Appoquinimink school districts for supplemental instruction. Using book donations from Success Won’t Wait’s collection, twice per school year, Back to Basics makes the age-appropriate books available to these students, which they can take home and keep.

The “Reading is Basic” project was conceived in 2011 in response to literacy statistics that rank access to reading materials as one of the most important predictors of a child’s future reading success. According to Sanford Newman in his book American’s Child Care Crisis: A Crime Prevention Tragedy, “The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. Communities ranking high in achievement tests have several factors in common: an abundance of books in public libraries, easy access to books in the community at large and a large number of textbooks per student.”
