This week, Success Won’t Wait and longtime literacy partner Back to Basics Learning Dynamics donated 400+ children’s books to Richardson Park Elementary School’s students for some fun summer reading!
Why summer reading is essential
Research has shown that children who continue to read during the summer vacation perform better in the fall when school resumes, and that even reading for simple summer enjoyment helps children with literacy skills, while helping prevent learning losses.
Worried that children will have to spend the entire summer with their noses in a book to receive any tangible benefit? Not so, say the experts!
About Richardson Park Elementary School
Richardson Park is a local elementary school in Wilmington, Delaware and serves students in grades K-5. The school’s history of commitment to improving literacy is well documented and the school operates several special programs including “Reading Success from the Start” and “Soar to Success.”
The Reading Success from the Start program is the backbone of Richardson Park’s intensive literary approach in the primary grades. The program trains classroom teachers in the use of the successful RSS techniques to instruct children in decoding unfamiliar words. Small group and one-on-one intense emerging reading instruction (phonetic and literature foundation) lead to significant reading gains.
The Soar to Success program is designed for students in the intermediate grades. The program trains classroom teachers in the use of proven strategies (clarify, predict, question, and summarize).
