This week, Success Won’t Wait was pleased to partner once again with Nemours duPont Pediatrics in their ongoing a book giveaway program for children who are patients at the Jessup Street clinic in Wilmington, Delaware. The donation of brand new 150 books from Scholastic, in Spanish and in English with Spanish, pushed the program total to over 4,150 kindergarten-5th grade books provided by Success Won’t Wait.
The reading/book giveaway program is simple — and incredibly effective. Every time a child has an appointment at the clinic on Jessup Street, he or she is encouraged to select a book to read and then take home. (Often, siblings get into the act, too!) By increasing access to reading materials, the program helps kids of all ages get enthused about reading. This early reading program is crucial, particularly now during the pandemic, when families frequently have more limited access to reading materials.
Why is early reading proficiency so important?
The necessity of achieving reading proficiency by the end of third grade is well-established among education professionals.

Unfortunately, despite best intentions, only 35% of starting fourth graders across the US are proficient in reading, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. So, programs like the Nemours duPont Pediatric Clinic Book Giveaway take on added importance.
