It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since the tragic events of September 11, 2001. But this September, service organizations across the nation will call on all Americans to not only remember the life-changing events of that day, but to voluntarily serve in honor of its victims and heroes.

The events of 2001 inspired Americans to come together in a remarkable spirit of unity and compassion. Today, the federally recognized September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is a way for the nation to forever remember the lives of those lost and injured, and pay tribute to the service of thousands of heroes following the attacks.

The purpose of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is to transform the anniversary from a day of tragedy into a day of doing good. “We wanted to make sure the terrorists didn’t have the last word in forever defining for generations to how America would remember and observe 9/11,” said 9/11 Day co-founder David Paine.

Across the nation, millions of Americans participate in different activities, events and ceremonies. So, where can you volunteer?

At 9/11 Day you can see signature events, or search for projects in your specific community. You’ll find everything from beach clean-ups to book drives, food pantry stocking to building houses. And remember to keep checking back, because community partners are adding new projects every day. You can even create your own project and recruit your friends, colleagues or others in your community to participate.

Take back the day. Turn the anniversary of September 11 into a day of doing good. Not despite the tragedy, but because of it.
