Each year on September 8, International Literacy Day champions the universal right to education. Established by UNESCO in 1966, International Literacy Day reminds us of literacy’s vital importance for dignity and human rights. The celebration of International Literacy Day also includes an annual theme; this year’s is “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”
Why is International Literacy Day so important?
Literacy is not merely the ability to read and write; it is the gateway to knowledge, empowerment and participation in society. According to the experts at The York Institute, here are some of the most compelling reasons why literacy is so important:

- Organize a reading “competition” or reading challenge to encourage kids to read more often.
- Host a storytelling event for your pre-K aged children.
- Hold a book drive to benefit a charity, local school or library in need.
- Raise awareness through social media.
