In preparation for a Title 1 teachers meeting, Success Won’t Wait volunteer Matthew McNeill organized a donation of over 500 children’s books for the Back to Basics Learning Dynamics “Reading is Basic” program.

Launched in March 2011, “Reading is Basic” is a joint venture between Back to Basics Learning Dynamics and Success Won’t Wait to make age-appropriate books available to Delaware Title I students.

Back to Basics services hundreds of Title I students from the Red Clay, Colonial, Brandywine, Smyrna, and Appoquinimink school districts for supplemental instruction.  Using book donations from Success Won’t Wait’s collection, Back to Basics’ teachers will distribute the books to students, which they can take home and keep.

“According to The Read Seed Inc.,  61% of poor children have no books at all in their homes,” says Back to Basics founder Beverly Stewart, M. Ed. “And, for the poorest children in America, lack of books in their homes is the greatest barrier to academic achievement. This is simply unacceptable.”

Since 2011, almost 2,000 children’s books have been provided through the program. Additional books will be distributed to the children at regular intervals, and as new students are added to the Back to Basics’ Title I program, they will also receive age-appropriate books.

“The statistics are frightening. Children in low income households own approximately ten times fewer books than children in middle class households. The result is that the gap between low and high income children’s reading comprehension scores is over 40 points,” says Success Won’t Wait’s Director Susan McNeill.

This partnership links together two organizations with a common quest: to eradicate illiteracy in the State of Delaware and provide the educational tools for success.

Back to Basics was founded in 1985 as a tutoring service in Wilmington Delaware specializing in one-on-one instruction for children and adults, and quickly gained a reputation for excellence and dedication to its students’ successes, both through tutoring as well as its unique K-12 Delaware state-approved Private School. The company has consistently given back to the community in a variety of initiatives.

In fact, this is simply the latest in a series of joint efforts between Back to Basics and Success Won’t Wait. Other joint ventures have included several National I Love to Read children’s book basket deliveries which included the donation of several thousand books, as well as company-sponsored book drives which help Success Won’t Wait continue to provide books to those who need them the most.

Founded in 2002, Success Won’t Wait, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit literacy organization based in Wilmington, Delaware. Want to learn more about Success Won’t Wait’s literacy projects, how to donate used  books, or volunteer your time? Simply visit About Success Won’t Wait.
